Step 2

Soften the butter by microwaving it in 10-second intervals until you see it start to slightly melt.

Ensure the butter is in a microwave safe bowl before melting the butter

Step 3

Place the softened butter into a large mixing bowl

Step 4

To the butter, add your ½ cup of white sugar and ¼ cup of brown sugar and mix until the ingredients are evenly distributed using the rubber spatula

Step 5

Crack your egg on a flat surface and add the egg to the butter and sugar, making sure no shell gets into the mixture, then discard the shell and mix the egg into the butter and sugar until the ingredients are evenly distributed

Shells should be safely discarded and remain out of the batter

Step 6

Add 1 tsp of vanilla extract to this bowl and mix again

Step 7

Add ¾ cups of chocolate chips to this bowl and mix until evenly distributed (this will be known as your wet mixture from here forward)

Measure the chocolate in a measuring cup before incorporating into the wet batter

Step 8

In your empty bowl, add in all your dry ingredients (1 ½ cup flour, ½ tsp baking soda, ¼ tsp salt) and mix gently until all ingredients are evenly distributed

  • When measuring the flour, scoop it into your measuring cup with the standard eating spoon until the measuring cup is slightly overfilled. Then, use the flat side of another utensil (ie spatula, handle of the spoon) to scrape the excess off, thus “leveling” the measuring cup.

Step 9

From this dry mixture, add about ⅓ of it to the wet mixture at a time, mixing between additions until you see no dry clumps remaining each time. Make sure to scrape the bottom of the bowl to get any dry mixture that may have slipped into the bottom

Mix the dry ingredients thoroughly with the spatula

Step 10

Once you have added in all of the dry mix as previously described, shape the dough into ~12 golf ball-sized balls and place these onto your baking sheet

Is Parchment Paper Necessary?
  • If you have a non-stick sheet, no preparation is needed.
  • If your sheet is not non-stick, line it with oven-safe parchment paper.

Step 11

Make sure your oven is fully preheated before putting in your cookies.

How Do I Know If My Oven Is Done Preheating?
  • Electric Ovens: Most electric ovens will make some sort of noise like a beep to let you know it is at the appropriate temperature.
  • Gas Ovens: Gas ovens will simply stop heating themselves once up to temperature. In which case, you will not hear the “whoosh” sound of gas being added to create the heat.

Step 12

Place the baking sheet into the oven on a rack set in the middle, and bake for 9 -11 minutes

Step 13

Once the cookies have finished baking, take the baking sheet out of the oven using the oven mitts and set it on a cooling rack or an off-stove top to cool for ~20 minutes.

Step 14

Enjoy your freshly baked cookies!
